Currently the Eclipse Platform can embed the WebKit engine in the SWT Browser on Windows only when the Apple Safari web browser is installed on the operating system. For some time Apple has stopped developing Safari for Windows and even the last version of Safari for Windows is not available for download anymore.
However, even when Safari was available for Windows there was a major usability drawback. Users had to install it manually from Apples web site. The license of Safari did not allow vendors to distribute it in their Eclipse-based project. Hence the out-of-the-box experience was not possible.
Therefore, it is important to implement an alternative way for embedding WebKit in the SWT Browser for Windows. There was an attempt to implement a Chromium support (Eclipse bug 405031), but it was deferred for some reason. Zend would like to resurrect this effort by sponsoring this issue.
