Telepathy should support OTR encryption

lishevita2

I have recruited a couple of Glasgow University students that I will be mentoring through this project. You should see their information here soon. We'll be putting the code up at the ScotlandHacks GitHub account while we work on it.

https://github.com/scotlandhacks

More information will be available at http://www.scotlandhacks.org.uk as it becomes available.

I am one of the students lishevita was talking about.

Congrats guys! I'm sponsoring this issue just to see this mentoring happening.

I see on https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16891 we could a link to github (https://gitorious.org/wolfrage-telepathy/otr/commits/34fc211e01a46fcf097c91e7573a5511fbf40cf8), different like yours.

Do you work with wolfrage or send a mail to him ??

I don't see progress from the others, so I'll start working on this.

That would be most welcomed!

I actually implemented this feature request, patches are on bugzilla. I did it on my free time.

Thanks to all donators !

Patches are available, waiting for review from a telepathy developper.

Thank you. It's about time. Hopefully it becomes part of the upstream code.

I blogged about it, with a screencast of OTR in action between Empathy and Pidgin. http://blogs.gnome.org/xclaesse/2014/05/04/otr-in-empathy/

This is fantastic news! Thank you Xavier, looking forward to integration - I see they are committing it into mainline right now. This is proof that crowdfunding great ideas does work. :D

Now GNOME will be able to celebrate Reset The Net on June 5th. Someone should nominate. ;)

Gigadoc2

I'm a bit lost, can you point me to the mainline repo, so i can try this out for myself?

Sun, 04/May/2014
Permalink

xavierclaessens

Gigadoc2: the source code is in my git repository for telepathy-gabble and empathy:
http://cgit.collabora.com/git/user/xclaesse/telepathy-gabble.git/log/?h=otr
http://cgit.collabora.com/git/user/xclaesse/empathy.git/log/?h=otr

There is no release our distro package yet, the code needs to be reviewed by at least one other telepathy developper first. I'll try to make it happen quickly.

Awesome! I guess some people will wait until merge or release to pay, but your work looks nice.

It is a 6 year old issue! Thanks!

This is me testing the freedom sponsors platform.

@young.sam.397: correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems you are accepting payments for the work XavierClaessens has done?! What was/is your part of the development and ongoing mainline-integration?

Thu, 08/May/2014
Permalink

xavierclaessens

young.sam.397 is probably a bot stealing money from projects. I've done the work alone, please do not send money to anyone else.

Thanks for the clarification. Can we get an administrator to purge this slimebag's account?

Hi, I'm an admin, let me take a look.

ok, thanks, I was about to send an email on the mailing list. Note, maybe it's honnest mistake from young.sam.397, I could have overreacted :-)

Even if that's true, I doubt someone here would fall for that though.

Anyway, I have unchecked the “accepting payments” flag on his solution and sent him an email. He at least has a right to say something :-)

For those who want to test on Ubuntu 14.04, I backported my patches in a PPA: https://launchpad.net/~zdra/+archive/otr

These packages includes all patches I made so far following the review, but it's not yet merged upstream, so use it at your own risk.

Feedback welcome of course!

I think freedom sponsors could do a little more to notify when someone is claiming a project is complete.

Can anyone confirm that this generally works? Is this issue complete?

Wed, 05/Nov/2014

bengt2

The bug report this is linked to still says

Status: NEW

So, no, it is not complete?

I tried the proposed solution a while ago but did not succeed. I also tried to contact the developer but he never responded: http://blogs.gnome.org/xclaesse/2014/05/04/otr-in-empathy/

Agreed! There should definitely be more UI/UX considerations going into the confirmation process.

Hi I'm Tony from FreedomSponsors. I'm genuinely interested into making FS a better platform for the community, so if you have suggestions about how we can do better, can you please drop them on Github or the Feedback section?

Thanks a lot!

I still can not confirm that the solution by Xavier Claessens is working… can anybody else (maybe provide some instructions)?
