Yup, I just thought it would be fun to have him post it here.
And who knows, maybe he'll find some competition, thenn again, for 25 bucks, maybe not :)

As mentioned by Russ Nelson on the Facebook page, there is unfortunately a serious issue with this logo: it is obviously based on the logo of the Open Source Initiative.

That logo is trademarked (just like the logos of Ubuntu, Firefox, WordPress and other high-profile projects), and therefore such a derivative is a no-go, unless you get written approval. See http://opensource.org/trademark-guidelines

This raises a quite profound question: Why isn't there a recognizable, public domain, international symbol that would stand for Free/Libre/Open-Source? The world needs something like that! Something like the radioactivity symbol (☢), peace symbol, or biohazard symbol (☣).

Another great cause to get kickstarted ! :)

Yes, I already send an email to trademarks@opensource.org
I'll post here about their answer.

Is there any followup on this? I see the site is still using the logo

No, not really. This is the reply I got from Karl Fogel on Jan 10:

Hey, Tony. We're discussing internally right now. I just didn't want you to think your mail had dropped into a black hole.

Completely independently of the logo question, good luck with freedomsponsors.org – it's a great service, and I'm really glad it exists (& strongly suspect others here agree ;-) ).

More soon,
-Karl

It's been a long time. I'll ping them again

Status update:
Sent Karl another email today:

Hello Karl, what's up?

I'm Tony from http://freedomsponsors.org, we talked about 6 months ago about FreedomSponsors logo, and how it might hurt OSI trademark.

Right now we're redesigning the whole website - aiming for a more engaging and beautiful layout.
This is a current preview of the new home - http://freedomsponsors.github.io/ (still subject to change)

After the new design is in place, we'll try to market the platform more strongly than ever.

We still have the undecided matter of the logo, and I feel that we really need an official yes or no from OSI.
I would love to keep the current logo, but if we do have to change it, this would be the right time.

Thanks a lot!

I'll post it here when there's any news.
Fingers crossed :-)
